Variations Of White-Black N Gray Hat SEO

We all know that search engine optimization, seo, is one way to drive traffic to websites. To give you a brief summary of how you can drive traffic to websites, here is a list of traffic sources:
  • Search Engine Advertising (Advertising on search engines via contextual text or image ads, e.g. Google, Yahoo, Bing PPC programs)
  • Media Buying (Advertising text or image ads on existing web properties. e.g. BuySellAds.com, MySpace Advertising, Facebook Advertising)
  • Search Engine Optimization (Optimizing websites with on-page and off-page techniques to obtain high SERP placements on major search engines)
  • Social Media Optimization (Leverage social media traffic such as Twitter, Digg, Facebook, MySpace...etc.)
  • Off-line Advertising (Yes, you can drive traffic to your website advertising on TVs, or placing ads on the streets, public transit...etc)
  • Email Marketing (It is still powerful if done right.)
  • Spamming (Spam on blogs, forums, social media websites, classified ads websites to drive traffic)
  • Hacking (Inserting links to popular websites, adding pop-ups, frameed pages...etc)
These are the current popular traffic generating techniques from my current understanding and knowledge in the field of Internet Marketing. The Internet is still growing very fast and people are always finding innovative ways to obtain web traffic. In this post, we'll emphasize on search engine optimization.
Search Engine Optimization is a huge area on its own. If you can master this field, you can make a lot of profit out of it.

Before we go further, let's get some definition straight:
  • White Hat SEO - Techniques to optimize web properties from on-page and off-page perspectives following search engines' guidelines.
  • Black Hat SEO - Techniques to optimize web properties NOT following search engines' guidelines. Websites will get penalized if caught implementing those techniques.
What is Grey Hat then? You may ask.

Grey Hat SEO is what I call the evolved black hat techniques that appear as "White Hat" from search engine perspective.

Now I am a big fan of the 80-20 rule. So I am confident of the following statements:

  • 80% of the people in the SEO market on the Internet know and use White Hat SEO techniques extensively; they follow the rules.
  • 20% of the people in the SEO market on the Internet use Black Hat SEO techniques.
  • Of those 20%, 20% of the the people are able to implement Grey Hat SEO techniques.
If we look at it this way:
  • 4% of the people in the SEO market on the Internet are dominating in SERP results on major search engines. (e.g. first position for high competitive keywords)
  • 16% of the people in the SEO market are making a good chunk of the search market in terms of SERPs. (e.g. on first page, within Top 10 results for high competitive keywords)
  • 80% of the people fail to get to the first page of SERP results for high competitive keywords.
Yes. In the virtual world, it is all about competition and the ability to gain massive results without getting noticed and penalized by search engines. People who are able to find innovative ways to get around search engines to produce massive results with minimum efforts. wins.

"The survival of the fittest is the ageless law of nature, but the fittest are rarely the strong. The fittest are those endowed with the qualifications for adaptation, the ability to accept the inevitable and conform to the unavoidable, to harmonize with existing or changing conditions."

When I speak about efforts, I'm talking about the actual time and work you put into, say, building links. Off-Page SEO is all about link building.

  • The majority of the people on the Internet will spend all their efforts manually commenting on blogs, forums, submitting articles...etc. This process is time consuming and the results are minimum.
  • A small group of people will use automation software to automatically comment on "do-follow" blogs, forums, article directories...etc. This process is fast and yields massive results.
I have not met one professional search engine optimization specialist that doesn't use any type of "black hat" seo techniques. The Internet is competitive. In order for your business to survive and grow you have to do whatever it takes to obtain as much as results in as little time as possible, without getting penalized. That is just reality on the web.
